Joel Sartore - Creating Portraits of Hope

Come hear Joel Sartore, National Geographic Explorer and photographer and see how he is building a photo ark one species at a time. From the smallest snail to the largest elephant and everything in between, including some of the world’s rarest birds. Iowa Bird Rehabilitation is honored to host National Geographic Photo Ark founder Joel Sartore to share his experiences and mission in conservation through his photography. 

Bringing Joel Sartore to Iowa is one way we can help bring awareness to the global problem of species loss. He is an inspiration to us all and a great example of how one person can make such an important impact worldwide.

ABOUT JOEL SARTORE

In 2006, world renowned photographer Joel Sartore started the National Geographic Photo Ark in an effort to document every species living in human care, inspire action through education, and help save wildlife by supporting on-the-ground conservation efforts. For nearly 20 years, he’s traveled to zoos, aquariums, and wildlife sanctuaries around the world in his quest to create a photo archive of global biodiversity. Sartore is a National Geographic Explorer, public speaker, author, educator, conservationist and regular contributor to National Geographic magazine. In 2018, he was named the Rolex National Geographic Explorer of the Year. 

Sartore has produced several books including Photo Ark Wonders: Celebrating Diversity in the Animal Kingdom, RARE: Portraits of America’s Endangered Species, Photographing Your Family, The Photo Ark, Animal Ark and The Photo Ark Vanishing: The World’s Most Vulnerable Animals.

Birds are in decline. And we are here to help. 

Iowa Bird Rehabilitation (IBR) is a wildlife rehabilitation center where we provide care for all migratory birds found in Iowa. We admit 2,000 birds each year, including over 100 different species. We are the only facility in the state to specialize in just wild birds, including songbirds, waterfowl, shore birds, game birds, and small raptors. 

We also focus on community, conservation, education, and awareness issues affecting our state. We serve our community each year by not only answering thousands of calls about birds, but also provide a meaningful place for our community to volunteer. The state of Iowa is a major flyway for millions of migratory birds each year, and IBR contributes to the health of our state with conservation, education, and awareness of how we can help as an individual and as a community. This isn’t just a local problem, it’s a global problem, and we are all part of the solution.
