3A Spring Hill

Spring Hill Prairie and then Prairie Creek Refuge

Join Carl Kurtz, the "Johnny Appleseed of prairie", and Tim Youngquist for a hike at Spring Hill and Prairie Creek Wildlife Refuge. Many know Carl Kurtz because of his books on prairie reconstruction. For the last four decades his seed has been the source for countless reconstructions throughout central Iowa.


Field trips may be subject to adverse weather. Field trip leaders will contact attendees if severe weather is an issue.



  • Registration limit: 25

  • Private land

  • Reconstruction with some remnant species 

  • Tallgrass prairie

  • Points of Interest: Expect to see plants, birds and bugs that live in the tallgrass prairie during late summer.

  • Physical Challenges: This hike will be moderately challenging since the grass will be long and it could be very hot. There are some mowed trails we will use as walking paths.

  • Restroom Facilities: Spring Hill Prairie - No, Prairie Creek Refuge - Yes
