2A Brushy


Region 2A
Prairie Resource Center
Brushy Creek State Recreation Area
10:00 AM - 2:00 PM (45 min break for lunch included)

Enjoy a guided tour by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) staff at the Prairie Resource Center located within Brushy Creek State Recreation Area. The hike will visit prairie seed production plots and diverse reconstructions utilized and managed for prairie seed production. The tour will also visit Root Cellar Prairie, a remnant that overlooks Brushy Creek Lake.


Tour will be led by Laura Leben and Bill Johnson from the Iowa DNR. They operate the Prairie Resource Center and annually harvest prairie seed to be used on public land prairie reconstructions throughout Iowa.

  • Points of Interest: Diverse methods of seed production, varying stages of prairie reconstructions (new seedings and mature seedings), scenic hillside remnant prairie overlooking Brushy Creek Lake

  • Food/Water Provided: No food. Water available if you bring your own water bottle.
