Cécile McLorin Salvant surprised the jazz world when she came from out of nowhere to win the Thelonius Monk International Jazz Competition in 2010. Since that watershed victory, McLorin Salvant has become known for her unique interpretations of unknown and scarcely recorded jazz and blues compositions, most recently captured on the 2014 Downbeat Jazz Album of the Year WomanChild.
